Three simple ways to speed up your slow windows xp

By Intekhab Joad of NA

Most of us face this issue at some point of time. And it can get really frustrating waiting and counting seconds for the page or folder to openup. Just try these 3 simple things and see the difference in your computers performance......

(1) click on the run command on the start menu and type MSCONFIG over here and click ok. This will open "Microsoft System Configuration Utility" In this window look in the top right hand corner you'll see a tab that says start-up. Click on this tab and look in the bottom right hand corner for a button that says disable all. Click on this button....and don't worry we are not removing any software from your computer the only thing this action will do is disable all the software from running simultaneously on your system without your knowledge or without being of any use to you. Here remember to recheck any option associated with your anti virus e.g if you are using mcafee as your anti virus then look for anything that starts with mc like mcshield or mcupdate. Now click on the services tab right next to startup tab, At the bottom of this tab you will a check box and right next to the check box will be this sentence"Hide all Microsoft services". Put a check in this box and a lot of options will disappear from the window, now click on disable all and again put a check next to any option associated with your anti virus. Once you are done with this, click on apply then click on close the system will ask you if you want to restart. Please go ahead and restart your system.......When the computer reboots you will again get a message that says which will say that you have used systems configurations blah blah.......ignore the msg just put a check mark here next to the option that says do not show this message again.

(2) Again click on the run command on your start menu type "prefetch" and click on ok. This will open up a folder which would contain a lot of files. Just go ahead and select(highlight) all the files(you can just press ctrl + a key) and delete all the files from here.

(3) Run a defrag on your hard drive. To do this you need to click on the start button-All programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter....once you click on disk defragmenter a window will open just follow the instructions on screen and you would be able to do a defrag of you hdd.

Check the difference in your system performance I'm sure in 70% of cases this will definitely improve system performance the rest 30% I'd frankly suggest taking a backup and doing a clean reinstall of the Operating system as doing any further troubleshooting and diagnosing what the issue is will be more trouble than a simple reformat.

There are a lot more complicated ways and if anyone needs any help in these kinda issues feel free to contact me on my email(intekhab.joad@gmail.com)

Regards,
Intekhab

P.s I've tried to keep the language and steps very simple so that even a basic computer user can follow them.

This is sort of scary, but I'm anxious to try it. Thanks for the great info. Someone mentioned to me before about disabling services and it did help. It's time to do it again I'm sure.
